Summer Eating

Often times, we read about buying local, eating local, eating with the seasons…. I’m a nutritionist and I don’t always remember or know what’s in season. But! I use my handy farm chart, and I’m going to share it with you!
One of the reasons it can be healthy for our bodies to eat what’s in season goes back to our ancestral make up. When we weren’t able to transport food from miles away, we ate what we could grow or find locally. Our body likes this, and you’ll notice that foods in season relate to what’s going on in the season. For instance, it’s hot in the summer, so there is a lot of water-laden produce grown – watermelon, berries, cucumbers to name a few.
Here are some things to look for – especially at your local farmers’ market, to enjoy summer’s bounty:
- Green beans
- Beets
- Cantaloupe
- Sweet corn
- Cucumbers
- Eggplant
- Kale
- Mixed lettuces
- Shallots
- Sugar snap peas
- Snow peas
- Peppers – all varieties
- Radishes
- Strawberries (ending soon)
- Swiss Chard
- Tomatoes – will be ALL summer 😊
- Watermelon
- Zucchini
- Herbs: basil, mint, oregano, parsley
Try some new recipes with the above foods and enjoy summer’s produce for the next few months!
