Food Rules, Part 3

Today’s article is Part 3 of our Food Rules.  I hope you’ve been reading all along, but if not, you will still enjoy today’s edition of Food Rules.  While I don’t like the word “rules,” it is important for most of us to have a code of what we will and won’t do.  I hope your personal code encompasses good eating and good nutrition!

  1. Eat meals.  This sounds silly, but many of us have gotten into the habit of snacking all day, and not sitting down to a good meal.  Relaxing and breaking your routine to eat a meal is not only nutritionally sound, it helps your stress level and gives your body and mind the break it needs each day.
  2. Shop the outside aisles of the supermarket, where fresh foods are featured.  The savvy shopper will still be sure to buy good, wholesome food in those outside aisles. Read the labels and make good decisions.
  3. Learn the Environmental Working Group’s “Dirty Dozen” and “Clean Fifteen” listing of fruits and vegetables when choosing organic produce.  Go to www.ewg.org and download the list.
  4. Become familiar with your local farmers’ market. Many local farmers practice organic farming even if they aren’t officially certified as an organic farm.  Ask questions and learn about their operation.
  5. Eat local.  This isn’t a fad – it’s a fact.  Your foods will be more nutritious because they are grown for your geographical area, and they haven’t traveled thousands of miles to get to you.
  6. Break the rules occasionally.  This is not permission to eat poorly, but, rather, a suggestion that you not obsess over healthy eating.  Your everyday habits of healthy choices are much more important than the occasional less than healthy choice.

Full Circle Vitality Group offers a “Shopping with a Nutritionist” package where we actually join you at the store or farmer’s market where you normally shop and help you learn to make the best choices!  Give us a call if you’d like more information.  It’s fun and informative!
