This week’s Part 4 of our Food Rules series provides some excellent tips that you can use in your daily life to keep eating well! I use some of these rules with clients – they’ve come from what I’ve learned, and from a great book by Michael Pollan, titled, Food Rules. Be sure to read it!
These rules are great tips you can incorporate into your eating regime.
- Eat the colors of the rainbow. You’ll get healthy phytochemicals, antioxidants and good-for-you nutrients that protect and nourish the body.
- Eat something new. Expand your food horizons and try a new food each week. This also helps your body adapt to a varied nutrition panel. It can be fun!
- If you eat meat, choose grass-fed, free-range meats – beef, chicken, pork, etc. These meats will be free of added anti-biotics and hormones, which can be disastrous to your gut’s environment.
- If you choose to eat fish, choose wild when you can (read: just about always!), and try to avoid larger fish, like swordfish, shark and tuna. Because of their size, they have high pesticide loads.
- Oily little fish is really good for you! Herring, sardines, mackerel and anchovies are really high in nutritious goodness. For some, these little guys are an acquired taste. But, if you like them, eat them as much as you can!
- If you eat grains, choose whole grains, not refined white flour. Pollan quotes his grandmother in his book, by saying, “The whiter the bread, the sooner you’ll be dead.” Whoa!
