Are We the Next Dinosaurs?

I like to say I’m a dinosaur, especially when faced with today’s modern technology, carefree lifestyle, casual dress – everywhere, and changing values.  But when speaking of our eating plans and diets, we may all be like dinosaurs – extinct!

We are not eating like we are biologically disposed to eat.  The foods we eat today are not part of our natural nutritional requirements. They’ve only been around for 10 generations, according to popular fitness and nutrition author, Jorge Cruise.  The foods we should be eating have been around for 100,000 generations.

Our modern diet is in complete contrast to what our bodies need and indeed...want.  We need to get back to the way we were genetically and biologically meant to eat.

You don’t need to follow any particular diet plan.  Those readers who know me, or those who have been part of my Corporate Wellness presentations know, I don’t like to use the word “diet” – the first three letters are d-i-e!

Rather, start thinking like a caveman.

Our ancestral cavemen ate wild, roaming animals they could capture nearby, or fish they could spear from the rivers and oceans.  They gathered plants, and ate the fruits of those plants.  They drank fresh water or the juice from the fruits they could pick.

I often counsel clients to eat food as it is found in nature – good, whole foods, as they grow.  Again, I jokingly ask clients, “have you ever seen a donut growing in a field?!”

Granted, our lifestyle is years removed from that of a caveman.  Our lifestyle requires us to eat – and we often desire to eat - processed foods and beverages.  It’s a fact of modern life.  However, we can try to make better, more healthful processed and packaged food choices.

Try some of these guidelines the next time you are choosing foods:

  1. Learn to read food labels (CALL US! We have a great class!).
  2. Look not only at the nutritional facts, but read the ingredients.
  3. If a food has more than 5 ingredients, it might not be the best choice.
  4. If you can’t pronounce any of the ingredients, are you sure you want to eat them?
  5. Ignore the marketing claims on the front of the package – they can be misleading.

Cavemen only had to hunt for food and then prepare and eat it.  We, in our modern world, have lots of good living to do!  But, allow some time to think like a caveman and make your meals from scratch.  Cavemen didn’t have refrigeration, but we do!  Try to arrange your hectic schedule to make several meals that will last for a week and that can double for lunches.  Make personal packaged meals by freezing food that you make for the future, and save some time and effort.
