Book! Not the fridge!
Or the cupboard, or a food container, or a website to order food.
This quote, “When bored, open a book, not the fridge,” came from my favorite calendar, Life’s Little Instruction Calendar. I’ve had one of these for years. My son, Tom, buys me one every year for my birthday. I love it!
While this was a lighthearted quote, it is SO true. How many times have you indulged in boredom eating, rather than true hunger? I’m guilty. Some days when I’m working all day in my home office, the refrigerator calls me…
So, I ask myself, “Am I really hungry? Or am I just bored?” Usually the answer is boredom. Or, I’m trying to put off a project, report, or just plain looking for something else to do.
How to combat this? It can be an easy task.
When you feel you are hungry, try to determine if it is true hunger. If you ate a good meal within the previous 3-4 hours, you probably shouldn’t be hungry. Try drinking some clean, fresh water and see if that helps. Or engage in some type of activity for about 20 minutes. Then, think again. Are you really hungry? If so, then, by all means eat! However, make sure you eat something healthful that will hold you till your next meal, like a good, fresh apple with some nut butter spread on it. Or a handful of nuts that you chew, chew, chew.
If this feeling happens frequently, begin to think about your meals. Are they packed with good proteins? Are you including good, healthful fats? And, lots of veggies? The better the meal, the fuller you’ll feel hours later, and this is delightful for your digestive system.
