Boost Your Brain Power

How many times have you been deep into a work project, report, or even a home project when you decide you just can’t do anymore at that moment?  Your brain is fuzzy, your energy is lagging, and aarrgh!! – you just need a break!

Your brain might be telling you something!  Research shows when you are stuck on one particular thought process, like a work report or home project, you can improve your outlook by changing your position or environment.  In doing so, you change your thought processes.  Sometimes, this is all that is needed to come up with a solution, or at the very least, renewed vigor to continue to attack your project.

The next time you are struggling, get up and move around for a few minutes - literally. If you are at a computer, sometimes simply taking a break to look away from your screen can help you refocus (in addition to being good for your eyes!).

Another thing you can try is to take a small break to have a brain-boosting snack.   Try one or two of the following:

  • Nuts – especially walnuts and cashews.  They have lots of omega-3 fats, which can help your learning, memory and concentration.
  • Eggs.  A great source of protein and amino acids which make neurotransmitters to keep you mentally sharp and motivated.  Eat the yolk, too – good fats!
  • Oatmeal – and not the little packets.  The good old-fashioned cook-on-the-stove, not in the microwave kind.  Oatmeal has vital brain health nutrients will help keep you full so you can finish your work!
  • Dark Chocolate – the deep rich cacao chocolate.  Look for at least 70% cacao.  Chocolate contains nerve stimulants that will help provide increased oxygen to your brain, improving mood, clarity and energy.
  • Water!  Water keeps your brain hydrated, which improves everything!
