Ah, the great outdoors! Most of us love to be outside, especially in the summer. Getting sunshine is important to our health. Authors Scott Ohlgren and Joann Tomasulo, in their book on cleansing for skin and digestive repair, report a lack of sunshine can lead to problems like hypertension, obesity, thyroid problems, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia and season-affected disorder.
However, spending a lot of time in the sun requires protection from the burning rays. Most of us judiciously apply sunscreen to provide this shield. However, the recent 2017 Sunscreen Guide from the Environmental Working Group makes a shocking statement – “Sunscreen should be your last resort.” Is this shocking? There is a lot of merit to their claims.
The EWG suggests you do the following.
- Wear clothes.
- Plan around the sun.
- Find shade – or make it.
- Don’t get burned.
- Sunglasses are essential.
- Check the UV Index.
The EWG website provides more information on all of the above tips.
The report also identifies the following:
- Best Beach and Sport Sunscreens
- Best and Worst Sunscreens for Kids
- Best Moisturizers with SPF
