The Dash

I just returned from a visit with my good friend, Ginger Klingler, who lives in Atlanta.  I don’t get to see Ginger very often, but we keep in touch through email and texting. Ginger is one of the most positive people I’ve ever known.  Spending time with her is so uplifting – it’s like a mini-vacation!

Many years ago, Ginger sent me a poem titled, “The Dash” by Linda Ellis.  I share this one with you because it is simple and beautiful. As we gear up for the holidays, think about your dash, and make the most of the upcoming moments!

A man speaking at the funeral of a friend referred to the dates of his friend’s life – the beginning and the end.  He told the crowd what mattered most, however, was the dash between those years – the years she spent alive on Earth.  He said:

It doesn’t matter what we own…the cars…the house…the cash.

What matters is how we live and love, and how we spend our dash.

So, think about this – are there things you’d like to change?

You never know how much time is left that can still be rearranged.

If we could slow down enough to consider what’s true and real.

And always try to understand the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger and show appreciation more.

And love the people in our lives…like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect and more often with a smile.

Remember that this special dash might only last a little while.

So, when your history is being read, with your life’s actions to rehash.

Would you like to be proud of the things they say about how you spent your dash?

How are you spending your dash?

To Your Vitality!
